Girlguiding UK Walking Scheme – Level 1

What experience or qualifications do I need to begin this qualification?
You don’t need any previous walking experience to begin this qualification, but you  will need to have an up to date 1st Response Certificate or equivalent first aid qualification.

If you have the relevant walking experience you may be able to go straight to Level 2. Speak to your Outdoor Adviser who will be able to advise you.

You do not need to complete Level 1 if you have already completed the:

  • Queens Guide Award (Exploration or Expedition involved walking)
  • Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Exploration or Expedition involved walking)
  • or you hold the Basic Expedition Leader Award

Where would this qualification enable you to take girls walking?
Lowland country including local urban areas, nature trails, tracks, fields, parks and recreational areas.

What will I need to do to gain this qualification?
You may have to attend a Girlguiding UK approved Level 1 training course unless exemption has been granted and be assessed whilst planning and leading a walk in Lowland country.

Additionally you will need to keep a log book of walks you have completed in the UK. For Level 1 this must be at least 6 walks, one of which must be of 6km or more in length.

How much will it cost?
There will be some associated costs whilst completing this qualification. There may be grants or funds you can access, you unit may also be able to support you.

How long does this qualification last for?
This qualification should be renewed every three years.
