Rainbows conquer ruby challenge

The 1st Moulton Rainbow unit has shown that they are girls taking the lead by completing the special Ruby Outdoor Challenge Badge. The badge was created to celebrate forty years of Girlguiding North West England and challenged girls and young women across the Region to experience the great outdoors but with a red ‘Ruby’ twist.

The Rainbows were given a range of activities from geocaching to taking part in water sports that they could choose from to complete the badge. The girls aged between 5 and 7 from Northwich chose twelve activities including decorating umbrellas with a water theme, planting red tulips, making a DIY telescope to look at the star constellations and visiting the local fire station to learn about fire safety before their candle campfire.

Leader in Training, Victoria Field said: “The girls had so much fun getting out and about and learning new things to complete the challenge and complete the badge.  Toasting marshmallows and making s’mores on our candle campfire after our fire safety visit was a real treat.”

Sue Lomas, Chief Commissioner for Girlguiding North West England said: “It’s brilliant that so many people have taken up the Ruby Outdoor Challenge, we really wanted to encourage our members to get out there and experience the fun and adventure that is available on our doorstep. I’ve already heard from lots of girls who have visited new places or learnt a new skill.”

Girlguiding North West England celebrated its ‘Ruby’ Anniversary in October 2011 with a spectacular girls-only event at Pleasure Beach, Blackpool.
