YOUNG CHESTER WOMAN, 20, GAINS TOP GUIDING ACCOLADE AT SPECIAL CEREMONY

Alyson Wright from Chester has shown she is leading the way after receiving Girlguiding UK’s top accolade, the coveted Queen’s Guide Award.

The award was presented to Alyson by Girlguiding UK’s Chief Guide Gill Slocombe – herself a Queen’s Guide – at a special ceremony held at Dyrham Park in Gloucestershire on Friday 16 September.

More than 20 young women from around the UK joined Alyson in receiving their Queen’s Guide Award. The award sees participants take the lead in a number exciting areas including developing a personal skill, working within pioneering community action projects, and overseeing ambitious outdoor pursuits.

Alyson is an Assistant Leader with 1st Huntington Guides and a member of Deva Senior Section. Her Queen’s Guide achievements included taking part in the Cheshire Hike walking competition which saw her walking over 40 miles in 2 days, and completing her Adult Leadership qualification. Alyson said: “Completing my Queen’s Guide Award has given me more confidence and a new enthusiasm, which has helped me make new friends at University. I’ve met so many new people that I wouldn’t have met without completing the challenges of the Queen’s Guide Award.”

The Queen’s Guide Award is the most prestigious guiding award open to members between the ages of 16 and 25. As well as the activities carried out by Alyson, other recipients experienced challenging and innovative programmes such as working with the homeless and raising money for national charities.

Chief Guide Gill Slocombe added: “Over the years the Queen’s Guide Award has given many young women an amazing sense of empowerment and confidence. I hope they will serve as an inspiration to many more young women all over the country who are thinking about getting involved in guiding.

“I’m sure the experience of the presentation itself will be just one of the happy memories they will look back on in years to come.”
