Cheshire Hike

Date: 12th Sep 2023 Author: Scout Websites

Cheshire Hike is an annual event run by Cheshire Scouts, for Scouts and Guides between the ages of 10½ and 17. Across two days, three age sections and four possible team sizes, Cheshire Hike sees 700+ Scouts and Guides walk between 30km and 60km between start and finish locations that are revealed just two weeks before the event. The event in 2024 will take place between 6th-7th April, and will see 720 Scouts and Guides within three age sections will walk these distances in a weekend, camping at a basecamp overnight.

There is a taster hike of about 8 miles on Saturday 14th October 2023. This will start in Little Budworth and cost £10. You will need a packed lunch, drink, comfortable shoes or boots and a waterproof jacket. This walk will include a coffee shop stop! If you are interested ask your parent/guardian to email Sue Parton at hiketraining@cheshireforest.org.uk with your name, age and date of birth and guide unit. She will then send back a consent form, payment details and location details. Closing date for Taster Hike is Monday 2nd October 2023. The taster hike gives girls the opportunity to decide if they would like to do more walking!

As with any large event like this, it can’t take place without a team of volunteers. The 2023 event had 350 volunteers involved across Guiding and Scouting! Roles could include anything from helping at the training weekends to helping at the actual hike event – catering, sharing skills, staffing checkpoints to tick off the teams as they pass through, general supervision – there are many different opportunities from just turning up for a few hours on the day, to more if you would like to. There is great camaraderie and it’s a fabulous team to be involved with!

Girls take what they do in guiding with them as they grow up. Everything from working in a team, to taking the lead, to speaking out on issues they care about. It helps them develop the skills and confidence to become the young women they want to be. ’
